TRC in collaboration with the Composites Unit of the Technological Center of Catalonia, EURECAT, has developed the first composites manufactured from recycled fiber.

This represents an important first step towards reusing turbine blades to create lightweight materials with robust mechanical properties that can be employed in a wide range of sectors, such as automotive manufacturing, railways, maritime transport, industry, leisure and sports. These raw materials can be used to manufacture panels, seats and consoles for use in rolling stock, street furniture, bicycles and boats, among many other uses.

The production of these new reinforced materials represents a considerable environmental success story, both in terms of cutting CO2 emissions and reducing the volume of waste. Further research in the future may revolutionise the composite material market.

From the landfill to the 3D industry

EURECAT and TRC manufacture the first plastics reinforced with recycled carbon fiber using 3D technology.

For all it is known that the 3D industry is at the vanguard of technology and that its implementation at an industrial level will revolutionize all sectors and their productive processes. The application of recycled fiber in the 3D industry is a new milestone that allows this emerging technology can use an economic product, with a high ecological value and high technical and mechanical properties.

First demonstrators for the automotive sector

The Composites Unit of the Technological Center of Catalonia EURECAT and TRC manufactures demonstrators for the automotive sector from recycled carbon fiber through the RTM process.

The RTM or Resin Transfer Molding process is based on the use of a mechanically closed mold.
The process is characterized by:

  • Quick and easy cleaning
  • Precision and control in the laminate.
  • The possibility of being automated
  • Its simplicity of processing (it does not require a great skill of the operator)
